Trusted Enterprise Manager
 whatsnew

Trusted Enterprise Manager 5.0 has been enhanced in response to our customers' requests and experiences.  You will find many new features, as well as major improvements to TEM's usability and performance.

New  5.0 Features

Prior Features

Real-Time Context Sensitive Auditing
Avatier has considered many customer requests and improved the Event Viewer log messages to be more descriptive and detailed.  You will know which Trusted Manager performed what action to whom (or what) and when it was done.  TEM is the first to offer accountable delegated administration!

Simply right click on any user, group, computer, or even a domain and quickly find out who has done what to whom.   All audit transactions are categorized into Add, Delete, or Modify.   Subcategories are used to show specific actions on users, home directories, mailboxes, and groups.

Back to Features

Dynamic Delegation with Wildcarding
Now TEM allows you to delegate machine management by specifying wildcard strings during delegation.  For example, if you want Joe in Accounting to stop and start services on all accounting machines, simply use wildcards to specify any computer that contains the Accounting key words such as:

Mimic Active Directory and Exchange 2000
TEM 5.0’s interface is exactly the same regardless the environment, Active Directory or NT 4.0, being managed.  Our Directory Shadow Repository (DSR) allows TEM to display and maintain information that is normally only found in Active Directory in NT 4.0.  TEM 5.0 will automatically transfer Exchange 5.5 data into the appropriate Active Directory fields unifying Exchange and User administration.

Back to Features

Enterprise Management of Exchange 2000
TEM 5.0 now supports management of Exchange 2000 mailboxes for Active Directory user accounts.  TEM 5.0 exposes user mailbox properties stored in Active Directory makes them available for reporting and management.  Trusted Managers can select many mailboxes at once and make global changes from a central console.

Back to Features

Active Directory Migration
User, group, password, and computer migrations have never been easier.  With TEM 5.0 simply configure migration options and then use business rules to determine which objects should be migrated using drag & drop to Active Directory.

Back to Features

OU Support
Users, Groups, and Computers can be added or moved to specific OUs based on Active Directory permissions.

Active Directory Migration
User, group, password, and computer migrations have never been easier.  With TEM 5.0 simply configure migration options and then use business rules to determine which objects should be migrated using drag & drop to Active Directory.

Back to Features

Improved Performance
TEM 5.0 still communicates to Active Directory for user selection, but delegation is now stored in our SQL repository which has improved Client performance while easing enterprise administration.

Back to Features

*ACCT*

Joe will automatically manage any new machine that contains the ACCT key phrase in the computer name.  You can even force the Trusted Manager to adhere to a computer naming convention when adding new machines to the domain.  In a Windows 2000 environment, delegation for a complex tree is made simple by delegating only once to allow Joe to manage all accounting machines across multiple organization units (OUs) in Active Directory.

Back to Features

Computer Delegation
Does your organization have a desktop deployment team?  You know the team; they go around deploying new computers to users’ offices or cubes.  Typically, they needed to have Domain Admin permissions, so they could add and remove computers from the NT Domain.  Now you can easily delegate the ability to add computers to the Domain while enforcing naming conventions.

Additionally, TEM 4.0 now supports delegating the following tasks:  removing specific computers from the domain, removing any computer from the domain, rebooting a specific computer or any computer in the domain, and finally hiding a computer from Network Neighborhood.

Back to Features

Service Delegation
Have you ever had Lotus Notes or Backup administrator ask for Domain Admin permissions so they can stop and start services on a specific computer.  Not anymore, now TEM 4.0 allows you to delegate stopping or starting of services as well as changing the service properties on a computer.   Keep your enterprise secure with TEM.

Back to Features

Share Delegation
It’s time to let your office administrators manage departmental access to their files and directories.  With TEM 4.0, you can delegate the share creation, deletion, and maintenance only to those that need access to a computer.

Back to Features

Integrated File, Directory, & Share Reporting
Has a user ever complained to you that they cannot access a particular file, printer, or application?  Well now you can find out why without ever leaving your desk.  By purchasing a license of Small Wonders’ Enterprise Security ReporterTM , you can now get a list of a user or group’s effective or explicit NTFS or Share permissions.

Back to Features

Enterprise-wide Password Policy Enforcement
Over 70% of security breaches occur from within the company.  To reduce these security breaches from occurring, Avatier adds several additional security policies to NT.  Each time a password is reset using the TEM Client, the user must adhere to a password convention set by your organization.   Optionally, you can choose to exclude 300,000 English words, 3,000 common names, and any word from your custom dictionary in a password.  The custom dictionary even supports wildcards.

Back to Features

Retained OU Paths in Windows 2000
If you are managing a mixed-mode NT and Windows 2000 environment, now you can maintain user and group organizational units (OU) paths when they are copied.  With Auto-Naming enabled, TEM automatically populates the Windows 2000 First, Last and Full name properties.

Back to Features

Improved Multi-Select Features
Mass changes to Exchange and Windows Terminal Services/Citrix MetaFrame properties are now possible with TEM 4.0.  Now you can filter on an Exchange mailbox area codes and globally highlight to replace with a new area code.

Back to Features

Improved Memory Management
The TEM 4.0 client does a better job using and releasing memory as users and groups are selected and deselected.

Back to Features

Tab-less Interface
Windows 2000’s powerful new features come at the price of complexity.   With Advanced options enabled in MMC, attempting to manage a user requires navigating a user property sheet that contains three rows of tabs with at least four items in each row.  Add Exchange administration and the number of rows increases even further.  At this number of rows, it is extremely easy for an Administrator to forget what was just changed…especially without a reporting mechanism.

TEM 4.0 employs the world’s first tab-less interface to managing NT user properties.  Organizing user properties into WTS and Exchange categories provides clear and concise management, thereby reducing your training and Help Desk costs.

Back to Features

Directory Shadow RepositoryTM (DSR)
The raw power behind Avatier’s industrial strength enterprise management/reporting tool is SQL 2000.  Leveraging this technology, TEM 4.0 gives you the ability to create on-the-fly reports to match your business needs.  You can sort, search, filter, print, and export any user, group, domain, Exchange, and Windows Terminal Server/Citrix MetaFrame property.  Additionally, you can perform management directly from your custom report.  TEM 2000 and future releases will extend this technology even further.  Anything else is just child’s play.

Back to Features

Integrated Enterprise Reporting and Management
Imagine being able to print, export, sort and filter on all Windows NT, Microsoft Exchange, Windows Terminal Services/Citrix MetaFrame properties as well as all Last Logon Statistics across multiple domains.  We did all this in TEM 3.0.

Now TEM 3.1 and 4.0 does this and more by combining real-time reporting with real-time enterprise management.  This allows you to quickly print a report on all the accounts in Marketing that have Password Never Expires enabled, and then two key strokes later disable them while you are still viewing a customized report.

Back to Features

Improved Exchange Support
In addition to the standard create and delete support, TEM 3.1 now supports copying all extended Exchange attributes when an NT/2000 user is duplicated.  Auto Naming, Hide/Unhide Mailbox, and Exchange quota support have all been added.   Most notably is complete integration with the DSR.  Now you can sort, search, filter, print and export any Exchange attribute.

Back to Features

Synchronized Global Group & Exchange Distribution List Management
Are you tired of managing Windows NT/2000 Users, Groups, Exchange Accounts, and Distribution Lists separately?  If so, then you know how easy it is for management to get out of control.

TEM 3.1 allows you to quickly synchronize all Microsoft NT/2000 global group operations with an existing Microsoft Exchange Distribution List.  As you drag and drop users with existing Exchange E-mail accounts into this global group, they are automatically added to the appropriate Distribution List.  Other operations that are synchronized include removing users from a group, copying global groups, and copying users.  Additionally, you may delegate this task to specific users or groups.

Back to Features

WTS/Citrix MetaFrame Enterprise Reporting
Too many Windows Terminal Services/Citrix MetaFrame users?  Can you quickly run a report listing all of the users who have “Connect Network Printer at Logon”?  Not until now! TEM 3.1 can do that as well as allow you to filter, export and print that information for all of your Terminal Service users.

Back to Features

Exchange Limits Tab is Now Optional
When modifying Exchange properties of a user, some customers wanted Trusted Managers to be able to configure the Exchange Limits Tab while others did not.  Now, it is your choice.

Back to Features

Global Group Quota Added for Citrix MetaFrame Managers
Many Citrix MetaFrame administrators use Windows NT/2000 global group membership to publish shared applications to their users.  Using TEM’s Global Group Quota feature, now you can limit group membership based on software license count and delegate publishing applications to application specialist freeing up more of your time.

Back to Features

Global Group and User Junction Management
Did you ever need to find out which accounts belonged to the Marketing, Advertising, and Sales groups?  Or did you ever need to find out which groups John, Mary, and Susan belong to?  Now you can…simply highlight multiple groups or users and you will see the users or groups that are common between the selected objects.

Back to Features

Integrated TEM Admin & TEM Client
TEM 3.1 has integrated TEM Admin group management and delegation into the TEM Client.  When logged in as an Administrator and you are using TEM Client provides dual roles allowing you to delegate and manage groups.

Back to Features

Improved Global Group Management
It looks and behaves like Windows 2000, but it runs on both NT 4.0 and Windows 2000.  As you come to expect from Avatier it has many additional features like Type-ahead Select.

Back to Features

Type-Ahead Selecttm Multi-Select Option
When Avatier introduced TEM 3.0, we introduced the world’s first Tri-pane interface that did not require the customer to press OK or Cancel to make a change.  This has saved administrators countless hours. Now another industry first, Avatier is the first software company to pioneer the Type-Ahead Select interface.

Simply begin typing the first few characters of the user’s account and press the space bar to select the appropriate user.  Continue this process until all users have been selected. Now you are ready to move/copy these users to another group, delete them, or make any mass property changes.  Finally, a management tool that mimics an administrator’s daily tasks!

As you can see figure above only the selected users are being dragged to a new group.

Back to Features

Revolutionary X-Agent Technology
Have you ever installed virus scanning, UPS monitoring, computer health monitoring, or inventory collection software agents on a machine?  Did the machine ever run the same again?  Typically the answer is NO; we at Avatier understand your resistance to installing any agent on your infrastructure machines.

That is why Avatier has designed X-Agents.  These agents are installed on a local machine to perform a precise function.  They do not communicate across the network, which enables them to have the smallest footprint possible; typically under 75K.  This also reduces the chance for memory leaks or a run-away processor.  Try X-Agent technology today and you will demand this reliability from all vendors.

Back to Features

Simplified and Streamlined Installation
For enterprise software that manages NT/2000, Exchange, WTS, via a SQL 7.0/2000 database, installation and configuration are getting easier with each new release.  If you are using TEM to manage Exchange, there is no need to setup an Exchange Client and Profile on the TEM Service machine.  Secondly, we have reduced the number of dialogs needed to get TEM installed during an Express Installation.

Back to Features

Advanced User Notification
Managing the enterprise is not a problem with TEM 4.  TEM 4 allows you to make global changes to the enterprise and with Advanced User Notification, you always know what you are changing and how long the task takes to complete.

Back to Features

Exclude Users from Management (TEMExempt)
Now you can specify which users or global groups of users to exclude from management by making them members of the TEMExempt local group of the account domain.  These excluded users cannot be managed by the TEM Client.  Refer to the included TEMCLIEN.doc file for details on how to enable this feature.

Back to Features

Last Logon / Logoff Support
With TEM’s X-Agent technology, you are a mouse click away from determining which users logged in yesterday or last year.  Now TEM 3.1 is able to take on the cumbersome task of collecting each user’s logon statistics from each domain controller and comparing them to determine the last logon time.

Back to Features

Microsoft Explorer Tri-Pane “look & feel” Interface
The first most notable change from TEM 2.x to TEM 3.1 is its newly redesigned interface.  TEM 3.1 Microsoft’s File and Internet Explorer 5.0 “look and feel” provides users with a familiar and comfortable environment for managing the enterprise.  Our new interface helps you leverage all of the Microsoft product training that your user base has accumulated, which means less questions and headaches for you!  After selling TEM on the market for 5 years, Avatier understands that the true cost of any application is the time it takes to deploy and make users effective with their tools.  Behind this greatly enhanced GUI, TEM 3.1 delivers a robust framework necessary for adding new managed objects and expanded functionality.

Back to Features

Drag & Drop / Cut, Copy & Paste Support
One of the wishes that Network Administrators want most, is to manage their network environment the same way they manage their file system: by dragging & dropping and cutting & pasting.  Now you can!  TEM 3.1 is one of the first products on the market that will allow you to drag & drop users from group to group, which will dramatically decrease the amount of time it takes to accomplish such a simple task!

Back to Features

Active Right-click Properties
Just like drag & drop, Network Administrators have become habitual “right-clickers” to accomplish the most common tasks.  With TEM 3.1’s Active Right-click properties, it does not matter whether you are managing Domains, Users or Groups, simply right-click and see the permissions you have over that object.  Make one more click, and the job is accomplished.

Back to Features

Bulk Loading Facility
How long does it take your company to create an NT account, build a home directory and home share, assign them permissions, create an Exchange account, and Windows Terminal Server account while enforcing user and mailbox naming conventions?  Using TEM 3.1 the entire process is under 20 seconds.

Back to Features

WTS & Citrix MetaFrame Support
Now as users are created or copied, TEM 3.1 can prompt the Trusted Manager to automatically create the Windows Terminal Server (WTS) settings for the user.  Additionally, the Terminal Server Home Directory is tied to Avatier’s Home Directory Management feature.  As users are being managed, TEM will automatically rename, delete, and create Terminal Server home directories and shares.

Back to Features

Express Install / Upgrade
The fastest way to begin saving your corporation time, money, and stress is with the new TEM 3.1 Express Install.  This install is one of the cleanest and slickest client-server installs on the market today!  It will get Trusted Enterprise Manager up and running in a few blinks of an eye (or cursor, if you prefer).

Back to Features

Enforces Naming Conventions
Now it is possible to the get same naming convention support found in Microsoft Exchange applied to management of your user accounts.  TEM 3.1 User and Exchange Auto Naming features not only enforce naming standards but also automatically sequentially increment duplicate accounts.

Back to Features

Active Command Line Interface (TEMNet)
For those of you who need the power of a command-line interface to TEM's functions, Avatier is happy to introduce TEMNet!  However, Avatier's TEMNet interface is unlike any other command interface on the market; because it is based solely on Microsoft's NET USER and NET GROUP commands included with NT server.  By closely adhering to Microsoft's standard interface, customers can deploy TEM with only slight modifications to existing batch files!  With TEMNet, you will see an immediate return on investment, because using TEMNet avoids costly conversion projects that proprietary scripting languages present and its familiarity saves on training costs.

Back to Features

Active Views
Once again, Avatier is leading the way pioneering new features like the Active Views.  Avatier’s Active Views allow you to dynamically view and manage your environment the way it works best for you!  Headaches will magically disappear when you are allowed to view your entire managed enterprise by Domains, Groups, or Users across multiple domains.

Back to Features

Enhanced Quick Password Reset (QPR)
Now with a touch of a button, you can quickly change a user’s password to their user ID, a corporate defined password, or a randomly generated password.

Back to Features

Improved Logging and Log Management
Now finding out who did what to whom could never be easier.

Back to Features

Console Lock
Did you forget to logoff or lock your computer before you decided to help a co-worker?  No problem with Trusted Enterprise Manager 3.1.  Now you can walk away with confidence knowing that TEM 3.1 will lock down the console to prevent unauthorized administration access.

Back to Features

Permission: Copy Group with Full Control
Until now, setting up autonomous management of NT groups of users was nearly impossible.  In TEM 2.04 and above, you can grant the Copy Group with Full Control (Cf) permission to a Trusted Manager.  This allows that Trusted Manager to have full control over copied groups or "child groups"; thus allowing centralized management of parent groups will full-delegated control over child groups.

Back to Features

Permission: User Defined Comment (Uc)
Until now, Microsoft has only made this User property available via a command-line interface.  With TEM 3.1, you can keep confidential user information along with the standard user properties Microsoft makes available.  However, the ability to view the User Comment field fully delegatable and completely secure because unlike other products Avatier encrypts this field so your network users cannot view it using the Microsoft NET USER commands.
