Technology Overview
Password Bouncer consists of three components:
- A Windows NT/2000 only client.
- A Service that can run on any NT/2000 workstation,
member server, or domain controller, but the service must
be logged in as a Domain Administrator over each domain
you want to apply a stronger password policy.
- A Password Policy *DLL that runs on the
PDC or each DC.
Client
The Password Bouncer client is used to obtain licenses, configure
password policy, and send requests to the Password Bouncer
service that publishes the new password policy to all Domain
Controllers.
Service
The Password Bouncer service is used to update password policy
on the PDC and all BDCs in an NT 4.0 environment. The
BDCs must be rebooted the first time the Password Policy DLL
is installed.
NOTE: In a Windows 2000 environment all DCs must be rebooted the
first time the DLL is installed.
Password Filter
Lastly, the Password Policy DLL checks the license to verify we have a trial or production
license; most importantly, it enforces the password policy
each time a user's password is reset.
